We have joined forces with the GRACE project which stands for Genetics Research Awareness via Community Engagement.
The Grace project is a team of researchers who are passionate about all things genetics related, and their mission is to increase knowledge and understanding of this fascinating field, for all.
They match our values as they are committed to increasing diversity in genetics research, so that it fairly represents, and benefits, all cross sections of society.
BDB have joined forces at many events including:
The Festival of Genomics and Biodata in London.
This annual event brings together businesses, charities/Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), researchers, students and patient advocates from across the genomics community.
We enjoyed talking with the public about their views on genomics research, some sharing personal stories. The event was also an invaluable opportunity to network with a range of organisations and to talk about the importance of equity in genomics and rare disease research.
The Glasgow Science Festival.
BDB led a public engagement activity called the ‘Tree of Life’ exploring 3 inherited genetic traits: earlobe attachment, thumb dominance when clasping hands and the ability to taste bitter. Based on results, people placed a different coloured leaf on our Tree of Life.
The activity offered a creative way to view how different, yet similar, we all are, and how much more there is to discover about what makes us human.
The event also opened the opportunity for people to share personal health stories and a reminder of the importance of recognising the differences between us in genomics research.
We have many more events planned with the Open Universities, Grace Project in the future.
They have a wonderful array of resources, including useful videos about Genetics on their website.
