The aim of the Breaking Down Barriers project is to strengthen the ability of patient organisations and support groups to develop and promote supportive and inclusive services for individuals and families affected by genetic disorders.
Patient organisations and support groups have an important role to play in addressing the challenge of developing appropriate genetic services for the UK’s multi-ethnic population.
Job Title: Project Outreach Officer
Days of Work: 3 days per week (flexibility around specific days of work)
Location: Based at home and essential travel is required
Salary range: £10,800 – £14,522 (actual per annum)
Closing date: Monday 5th March at 5pm
Interviews will be held during the week commencing 12th March 2018 and as this is a national role, interviews will take place in different parts of the UK depending on the location of applicants.
As the Project Outreach Officer, you will provide support to the Project Lead and work closely with member organisations to help them make a difference.
Working directly with people from ethnic minority communities to improve their access to services, you will help design, translate and test information and resources in a variety of different formats and help establish new support groups for individuals and families, linking with relevant health care providers, community and faith representatives.
It would be advantageous to have some experience of genetic counselling and an understanding of patient organisations, charities and/or support groups. You will have excellent people skills and be a competent IT user. You will be a good listener, well organised and motivated. Critically important to this role is respect and sensitivity for the religious and cultural beliefs of individuals and families and the ability to speak and read Urdu and/or Punjabi.
It will be a distinct advantage if you have personal experience of genetic conditions.
